Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) has announced 6 rounds of counselling and seat allotment for the academic year 2016-17, while the academic session 2016-17 for IIT admissions will begin from July 22. For admission to National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) and Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs), all candidates, who have either accepted or will accept seats, have to report to the respective institutes during July 22 to 26.
The joint counselling authority has released a revised counselling schedule, where it reflects that the ongoing counselling process for admissions to Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) and Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs) will now be conducted in 6 rounds, till July 20. Joint counselling for admissions to IITs and NIT+System commenced on June 24 with registration and choice filling for academic programmes. JoSAA has already conducted two rounds of seat allotment, where the result for first round of seat allotment was announced on June 30, while the seat allotment result of round 2 was declared on July 6.
Earlier, the counselling authority had announced that JoSAA will conduct counselling and seat allotment in 4 rounds, however JoSAA has now added 2 more counselling and seat allotment rounds. For the academic year 2016-17, JoSAA is conducting joint counselling for B. Tech admissions across 92 participating institutes, which include 22 IITs, ISM Dhanbad, 31 NITs, 20 IIITs and 18 GFTIs. Last year, counselling for IIT admissions was closed after third round of seat allotment. A fourth round was conducted by JoSAA for admissions to NITs, IIITs and GFTIs only. This was followed by a special round of counselling conducted by CSAB separately for reserved seats other than Open-CRL category. However, for this year, the seat allocation authority has more rounds of counselling for admission to IITs, ISM Dhanbad and NIT+System.
Till 2014, separate counselling was conducted for admissions to IITs and NITs/IIITs/GFTIs. Counselling and seat allotment to IITs and ISM Dhanbad was conducted by Joint Admission Board (JAB) for JEE Advanced qualifiers, while admissions to NITs, IIITs and GFTIs were offered through counselling and seat allotment conducted by Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) for JEE Main qualifiers.
